Started in 2001, the .NAME generic extension is the sole TLD meant for personal websites only. These domains can include personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other labels people are famous by. At first, just 3rd-level registrations were possible, so if you wished to order john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already grabbed 3rd-level names remained functional.
